Animal Farm
Summary
This allegorical novella depicts a group of farm animals who overthrow their human owner, Mr
Jones, and establish their own government, led by the pigs Napoleon and Snowball. Initially, the
animals hope to create a society of equality and fairness, but over time, the pigs become more
corrupt and oppressive, using the same tactics as the humans they replaced. As the pigs
consolidate power, they alter the commandments of Animalism to suit their needs. The phrase
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" reflects the growing
inequality. The novel critiques the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and the rise of
Soviet totalitarianism, showing how revolutionary ideals can be corrupted by power.
