1984
Summary
Set in a totalitarian dystopia, 1984 follows Winston Smith, a low-ranking member of the Party
who lives under the constant surveillance of the oppressive government led by Big Brother. The
government controls every aspect of life, from history to thought, using propaganda,
manipulation, and constant surveillance to maintain control. Winston secretly rebels against the
regime by starting an illicit love affair with Julia and seeking out a rebellious group called the
Brotherhood. However, Winston is eventually caught, tortured, and brainwashed by O'Brien, a
high-ranking Party member. In the end, Winston is forced to betray Julia, and he comes to love
Big Brother. The novel serves as a chilling critique of totalitarianism, surveillance, and the power
of language in controlling reality.
