The Fellowship of the Ring
Summary
Frodo Baggins, Bilbo’s nephew, inherits the One Ring, a powerful artifact forged by the Dark
Lord Sauron to control all of Middle-earth. The story begins with Frodo’s peaceful life in the
Shire, but he soon learns that the Ring must be destroyed to prevent Sauron from conquering the
world. Gandalf the wizard advises him to take the Ring to Rivendell, where a council is held to
decide the best course of action. A fellowship of nine members, including Aragorn (a ranger),
Legolas (an elf), Gimli (a dwarf), Boromir (a man), and Frodo’s loyal friends Sam, Merry, and
Pippin, is formed to undertake the perilous journey to Mount Doom, where the Ring must be
destroyed. The journey is fraught with dangers, including the betrayal of Boromir and the loss of
Gandalf to the depths of Moria. The novel sets the stage for the epic struggle against Sauron.
