The Hobbit
Summary
Bilbo Baggins, a quiet and unadventurous hobbit, is unexpectedly recruited by the wizard
Gandalf to join a group of dwarves on an adventure to reclaim their homeland from the dragon
Smaug. Despite his initial reluctance, Bilbo’s courage grows as he encounters trolls, goblins,
elves, and even the creature Gollum, who gives him a mysterious ring. Bilbo steals a golden cup
from Smaug's hoard, which leads the dragon to attack a nearby city. After Smaug is killed, Bilbo
helps broker peace between the dwarves, elves, and men. In the end, Bilbo returns home,
changed by his experiences, and the book sets the stage for The Lord of the Rings.
