Klara and the Sun
Summary
Klara, a solar-powered Artificial Friend, observes human life from a store window until she is
purchased to care for a sick girl named Josie. Her worldview is shaped by her unwavering faith
in the healing power of the Sun. As she serves Josie, Klara witnesses the complexity of human
relationships and the burdens placed on children in a society obsessed with genetic enhancement.
She offers loyalty and empathy, despite not being human herself. Klara’s belief in sacrifice leads
her to take a mysterious act of devotion to help Josie heal. Though ultimately replaced, Klara's
reflections highlight questions about love, consciousness, and purpose. The novel offers a
poignant, quiet look at humanity through artificial eyes.
