Sense and Sensibility

Summary

After the death of their father, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood and their mother are left in

financial hardship. Elinor represents "sense," maintaining her composure and adhering to social

conventions, while Marianne represents "sensibility," expressing her emotions and desires freely.

The two sisters face the ups and downs of love and heartbreak, with Elinor's romantic interest

being hindered by financial considerations and Marianne falling in love with the passionate but

unreliable Willoughby. The novel explores the balance between reason and emotion in love and

relationships, and ultimately, both sisters find happiness on their own terms, having learned the

importance of balancing heart and mind.
